MCW DESIGNS
I am inspired by simple forms and bright colors, and use a variety of materials in my work, including handmade paper, silk, watercolor, oil, gold leaf, and clay.
Compositions for my paintings are often set down in a sketchbook without particular conscious thought, but with an effort to capture a sense of how shapes and colors relate to one another energetically, or to create a sense of movement. The images could be telling a story - maybe one at a microscopic level.
For my pottery I use a variety of clay bodies. Their distinct qualities of texture and color inspire different forms and react uniquely to glazes. Porcelain clay is very smooth and white, allowing the crisp lines and bright colors in my striped pieces. Other clays I prefer for larger pieces, as well as those with lids and handles. I also use appliqué and sgraffito decoration techniques.
I am a studio member at City Clay in Charlottesville and show my pottery and paintings at local galleries in Charlottesville.
